What's actually in the box

1. The 3D engine

Rendering a building in a browser, rotating it smoothly, and having it work on a five-year-old phone. This is the part that looks like the whole job from the outside, and it's genuinely the most solved — there are good libraries for it.

What's not solved is making the 3D respond to real construction. A box that stretches when you change the width is a weekend. A building where changing the width re-lays the column spacing, re-sizes the trusses, moves the purlins and re-cuts the panels is a different problem entirely.

2. The framing logic

This is the expensive one, and it's the reason generic configurator quotes come in low and then triple.

A framing engine has to know things a developer cannot look up: how a valley between a lean-to and a host building actually gets framed, what a porch dormer does to the rafter layout, how girt spacing changes below a wainscot line, where a header goes and what it displaces. That knowledge doesn't live in documentation. It lives in people who've built buildings, and it has to be extracted from them and turned into rules one edge case at a time.

And it's per framing system. Post frame logic doesn't transfer to red iron. Red iron doesn't transfer to tube frame. Each system is its own engine with its own rulebook.

3. The pricing engine

Turning a model into a number your business can stand behind. Member-level takeoff with lengths, waste calculation, panel and trim coverage, fasteners, and a way for pricing to be updated without a developer every time lumber moves.

Most homegrown configurators die here. The 3D gets built, it looks good, and then the pricing is a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand — which means the tool never actually replaced the work it was meant to replace.

4. Plan and document output

Elevations, sections, framing plans, cut lists, PDFs your customer or your building department can use. Generating drawings from a 3D model is its own discipline, and consistency across every view is what makes them worth having.

5. The infrastructure nobody quotes

Accounts, permissions, saved designs, quote history, branded output, an embed for your website, lead routing, hosting, backups, and security. None of it is the product, all of it is required, and it's usually discovered after the budget is set.

The question that reveals the real scope: ask a development shop what happens to the material list when you add a lean-to. If the answer is "we'd add a lean-to option," they're quoting a rendering tool. If they start asking about the host wall framing, they understand the problem — and their number will reflect it.

The part that never ends

Software isn't a purchase, it's a subscription you pay in maintenance whether you meant to or not.

Industry rules of thumb put annual software maintenance somewhere in the range of 15 to 25 percent of the original build cost, every year, forever. That's the line item that turns a one-time project into a permanent cost center.
