Why one system is the default
Because each system is a genuinely separate engineering problem, and the work doesn't transfer.
Post frame is wood columns, trusses, girts and purlins on a spacing driven by column capacity. Red iron is rigid frames with bolted connections, secondary steel and a completely different set of rules. Stick frame is residential wood construction with span tables and code minimums. Tube frame is bent galvanized tubing with factory bracing schedules. Hybrid pole barn is wood posts with steel trusses that run at a spacing neither parent system uses.
Building one of these well takes real domain knowledge. Building five means building five engines and keeping them all current. Most software companies build the one their founders knew and market the rest as "coming soon" indefinitely.
What running multiple tools actually costs
Pricing drift
The worst one, and the quietest. Lumber goes up, you update the post frame tool, and three weeks later you quote a red iron building off stale numbers in the other system. Nobody catches it until the margin is gone.
You can't compare
A customer with a 60-foot span sitting near the post frame to red iron crossover should get both numbers. With two tools that means designing the building twice, in two interfaces, and reconciling two takeoffs by hand. Most people don't bother, which means the customer gets whichever system you happened to reach for.
Training and turnover
Every tool is something new hires have to learn. Two tools is more than twice the training, because now they also have to learn which one to use when.
Per-seat licensing multiplies
If each tool is licensed per user, adding a system multiplies across your whole team, not just the person quoting that job.
Worth pricing out: add up what you pay across every tool, times every seat, plus setup and implementation fees. Platforms in this category can run several thousand per user per year before implementation. Compare that to a flat team price and the math often surprises people.

Few builders need all five every week. But most need more than one, and the second one is where single-system tools stop earning their price.
What to check before you buy
- Are all the systems the same depth? Ask to see the framing view with cladding off for each. Depth varies wildly inside the same product.
- Is pricing separate per system? Separate tiers per framing type is the same problem as separate tools, with extra steps.
- Can you quote one building two ways? The crossover comparison is the test.
- Does the takeoff format match across systems? If post frame exports one shape and red iron another, your back office is doing reconciliation work.
- Does interior framing work on every shell? Matters for barndominiums, where the shell might be any of three systems.
The honest counterargument
If you only build post frame and you always will, a deep single-system tool may serve you better than a broad one. Specialists can go further on edge cases within their system.
The question is whether that's actually true of your business. Most builders who say they only do one system have turned down work in another, or subbed it out, or quoted it on a spreadsheet. That's a cost too — it just doesn't show up on a software invoice.
